Founded in 1934 in Ksar Hellal, this movement led the fight against the French protectorate, advocating a modernization of militant methods and rigorous organization throughout the country. This philatelic issue highlights the importance of the party as architect of the modern State, celebrating four decades of a political journey which led the nation from the claim of sovereignty to republican construction.
The historical event highlighted concerns the date of May 20, 1954, marking the transfer of Habib Bourguiba from his place of exile on the island of La Galite (off the coast of Tunisia) to the island of Groix (in France). This period of forced removal, which began in 1952, aimed to isolate the leader of the national movement to weaken the resistance, but it ended up strengthening his international stature and increasing pressure on the colonial authorities. By immortalizing this maritime journey between the two shores of the Mediterranean, Tunisia pays tribute to the ordeals of exile which preceded the negotiations for internal autonomy, making this stamp a witness to the sacrifices made for the freedom of the country.
