Description
The 19th edition of the Men's World Handball Championship took place from January 23 to February 6, 2005 in Tunisia. This is the second time the competition has taken place in Africa after the 1999 World Championship in Egypt.
Spain won its first title by beating Croatia, the reigning world champion and Olympic champion six months earlier, in the final.
Final competition for the last Barjots (Jackson Richardson, Grégory Anquetil and Guéric Kervadec), the start of the competition is difficult for France which loses to everyone's surprise against the Greeks then is held in check by the host country. On the verge of elimination during the main round, coach Claude Onesta was challenged. For the last match of the group, the French must count on a defeat for Greece, which is effectively beaten by the Czech Republic, although it has already been eliminated. In the semi-final, France lost to Croatia then found Tunisia for bronze: in a committed and tense game, the French snatched the victory by a goal, saving at the same time their coach Claude Onesta.
