Description
This stamp highlights the Common Porgus (Pagrus pagrus), a noble fish emblematic of the rocky and sandy bottoms of the Tunisian Mediterranean. Hedi Choul's illustration accurately reflects its robust morphology and its coat with silver and pink highlights, characteristics which make it a catch of choice for local artisanal fishing. Beyond its undisputed gastronomic value in Tunisian cuisine, this philatelic issue from 1991 is part of an approach to promoting the national fishing heritage. It recalls the vital importance of marine resources for the economy of coastal cities and the need to preserve the biodiversity of the Regency coasts, a true biological crossroads between the eastern and western basins of the Mediterranean Sea.
