Description
This stamp highlights the Pomegranate Flower (Punica granatum), known in Arabic as “Zahr al-Rumman”. This fruit shrub is one of the pillars of Mediterranean orchards and occupies a central place in the Tunisian agricultural landscape, particularly in the regions of Gabès, Testour and Cap Bon. Its bright orange-red flowering, which occurs at the end of spring, announces the formation of the emblematic fruit whose ruby grains are celebrated for their freshness. The presence of this flower on a postal figurine underlines the importance of horticulture and fruit biodiversity as essential components of the natural wealth and identity of the territory.
Beyond its botanical aspect, the pomegranate tree is a powerful historical symbol, often associated with the Punic heritage of Tunisia (the Romans also called the fruit Malum Punicum, or Punic apple). A symbol of prosperity and fertility in the collective memory, it is today a major export product and a key ingredient in gastronomy as well as in traditional local pharmacopoeia. By devoting this stamp to the pomegranate flower, the Republic promotes an exceptional terroir and an age-old culture which unites the country's ancient past with its modern agricultural dynamism, making this species a true ambassador of the splendor and generosity of the Tunisian land.
