Description
Hatem El Mekki (حاتم المكي), also spelled Hatim Elmekki, born May 16, 1918 in Jakarta (Indonesia) and died September 23, 2003 in Carthage, is a Tunisian painter.

He is considered one of the greatest painters in Tunisia due to his longevity, the multifaceted and abundant nature of his work and the recognition he enjoyed from the period of the French protectorate until the end of his life.

Born to a Tunisian father expatriated in Indonesia and an Indonesian mother of Chinese origin, he only knew Tunisia at the end of a long journey undertaken in 1924, from Batavia to Tunis, which marked a profound rupture, that of the maternal then paternal bond since his father left shortly after.

He stood out early for his drawing talents which earned him scholarships, first at the Carnot high school in Tunis then in France, in Lyon and Paris, where he rubbed shoulders with contemporary artistic trends. His work as an artist does not prevent him from expressing himself on more political subjects. He signs caricatures and political drawings favorable to the national struggle under the pseudonym Mahmoud.

His talent is nourished by the multiple influences that he accepts, from the art of Indonesian batik to the figurative art that he does not hesitate to develop for a European clientele then in the service of the independent Tunisian State. He is also a prolific poster artist and a visual artist deeply interested in mosaics.

But his art remains above all associated in popular consciousness with the design of Tunisian coins and bank notes as well as postage stamps of which he designed 454 models from 1957 to 1995.
