Description
Ibrahim ibn al-Aghlab, born in 756 in Kairouan and died in 812, is the founder and first emir of the Aghlabid dynasty reigning over Ifriqiya from July 8, 800 to his death.
He is the son of Al-Aghlab Ibn Salim, governor of Ifriqiya between 765 and 768. Skillful administrator of the Zab region, in 800 he obtained sovereignty over Ifriqiya from the Abbasid caliph Hâroun ar-Rachîd, for himself and his descendants, against the payment of an annual tribute.
Around 801, he built, three kilometers south of Kairouan, the princely city of Al-Abbassiya to which he transferred the seat of government when its construction was completed in 810.
