Description
Habib Achour (1913-1999) is a monumental figure in trade unionism and Tunisian political history, inseparable from the UGTT which he co-founded and led for several decades. A companion of Habib Bourguiba's struggle for independence, he paid for his nationalist commitment with multiple arrests under the French protectorate. After 1956, its relationship with Bourguiba's power became a complex mix of collaboration and open confrontation, with Achour fiercely defending union autonomy in the face of single-party attempts at hegemony. This standoff culminated in the tragic “Black Thursday” of January 1978, where a general strike led to his imprisonment, making him a symbol of social resistance. Originally from the Kerkennah Islands, he marked the collective memory as a charismatic tribune capable of mobilizing the masses, leaving behind him a powerful trade union center which remains, even today, a key political actor in Tunisia. The 60th anniversary of the Tunisian Republic was celebrated on July 25, 2017, marking six decades since the abolition of the monarchy and the proclamation of the republican regime on July 25, 1957. This event underlined the anchoring of sovereignty nationality and attachment to the civil state.
